Greenland’s Ice Sheet is melting at an eye-watering pace as climate change relentlessly progresses under the business-as-usual scenario. Ultimately, Greenland’s marine-terminating glaciers will retreat on land, likely leaving behind drastically altered marine fjord ecosystems. Since marine-terminating glaciers induce upwelling, which sustains high productivity in their respective fjords, a significant negative impact is expected on the fjords’ ecosystems and essential ecosystem services when these glaciers become land-terminating. The IMAGIN project, therefore, seeks to uncover the implications of disappearing marine-terminating glaciers on benthic fjord communities and to what extent the ability of the fjords to sequester carbon is affected.
